Betty J. Peterman Lass was born October 31, 1927 to Walter and Catherine Flathers Peterman in Maquoketa, Ia.  After a brief illness and hospitalization, Betty left this world and entered heaven on June 23, 2013. Memorials may be given in Betty's memory to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston and to the Preston Library.

As a young child, Betty lived in Maquoketa and South Dakota before returning to the Welton area where she was raised by her Grandmother Flathers.  She graduated from Welton High School in 1945.   Betty met and fell in love with Arlan W. Lass and they married on September 2, 1945.  She was by Arlan's side as they moved to DeWitt, Davenport, Grand Mound, Preston, Anamosa, Phoenix, AZ before finally moving back to Preston where they owned and operated Lass Farm House Foods.  Betty raised her family, was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Preston, taught Sunday school, was a member of the American Legion Auxillary, was a volunteer EMT in the early days of the Preston Ambulance Service and volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels.  An avid reader, she loved to cook and invited all who visited to share a meal or fresh-baked cinnamon roll and coffee.  Betty sewed, played piano and enjoyed country car rides.  Over the years, she shared friendship with Dee, Myrtle, Lucy Yvonne and many others.  Betty cherished her family and lovingly cared for Arlan, David and Paul during their illnesses.  Her children have fond memories of Christmas Eve traditions, making May Day baskets, taking family vacations, playing the Spoons card game and their mother's constant love and encouragement.  She took her grandchildren fishing at Trout Lake, made them paperdolls and paperchains and let them go "shopping" and "help" at the grocery store.  Betty was a one in a million and helped anyone in need.

Betty was the adored mother of David (deceased), Dennis (Spragueville), Gwen (Mark Entsminger, Hinsdale, Il), Barbara (Dan Buskirk, Parkersburg, W. Va), Christy (Scheffert, Edwardsburg, Mi), Paul (deceased) and special daughter Becky Bormann (Preston).  Others mourning her passing are her half brother Ed Peterman and half sister Carrie Griffin, sisters-in-law Joan Lass and Ruth Ann VanMeter, step-sister Lois Mills, step-brothers Clarence and Carl Seymour, cousins Carroll Flathers, Verna Mae Reese and Myrna Pinneke as well as the grandchildren Betty loved so much;  Matthew, Katie (Miller), Beth (Dowlearn), Kelsey and Morgan Lass, Bob, Bryan and Brad Lass, Daniel, Cory, Adam and Tyler Entsminger, Christopher, Neil and Carissa Rosenbohm and Michael Scheffert.  Also surviving are great-grandchildren Aiden, Colin, Owen, Finley, Everly and Zane Miller, Shelby, Sean, Kevin and Taylia Lass, Claire and Teddy Entsminger, Addyson and Cambry Dowlearn, Grace, Harleigh, Kaelyn and Lola Rosenbohm, Kaden Streck and Koa Entsminger, nephews Doug, Dean, Richard, Jim and Tom Lass and niece Carol Jo Martin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Frank Seymour, a stillborn son, dear husband Arlan, firstborn David and precious Paul, brothers-in-law Eugene and Ronald Lass.

Following Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place.  A Memorial service will be planned at a future date.

Betty's Family, so sorry to hear about your loss.

I remember how much fun it was as a kid to buy penny candy at Lass's grocery store in Preston. We'd put it on our parents charge account and they were none too happy when they got the bill!  Wonderful memories of your family!
